A Brief History of Vacuum Cleaners

For many years having to clean your house was a much more manual job than it is these days with most people having to use a broom or a mechanical carpet sweeper to sweep any flooring that they may have in their home in the late eighteen hundreds the predecessor to the vacuum cleaners we know and love were invented using bellows that ran off of built-in cams to create the power needed to move the bellows and there were versions that used belt driven fans to suck up the dirt from the floor but this was very cumbersome to use.

The very first motorized vacuum cleaner was given the nickname ‘Puffin Billy’ and was invented by a man called Hubert Booth in 1901 it was a very large machine powered by an internal combustion engine and was so large it had to be drawn by a horse and carriage and although it was so large the machine had to be kept outside whatever property was being cleaned with the suction tubes with nozzles on the end being long enough to reach into all the rooms in the property. Then as electricity became more prevalent Booth created a similar machine that was powered by electricity instead of gas or petrol. Though both of these machines are very large and look extremely different on the outside the actual mechanics inside that do all the work still run from the same principles as our modern vacuum cleaner.

Because of the size of the Booths machines, he did not even attempt to sell them, instead, he decided to sell cleaning services and employed staff to use the machines even gaining the royal seal of approval as a Booths Vacuum Cleaner was used to clean the carpets of Westminster Abbey before the kings’ Coronation in 1901.

The Modern Day Vacuum Cleaner

The very first vacuum cleaner that both would look and act as the vacuum cleaners that we see today was made in 1905 by Walter Griffith called Griffith’s Improved Vacuum Apparatus for Removing Dust from Carpets. This had the familiar flexible suction tubes with different nozzles that you could attach for different jobs so this was advertised as being easily powered by one person which at the time was a very big deal though this was still a chore as the user had to pump a handle to activate the bellows whilst moving the suction tube around the area that needs cleaning.

Then in 1907, a janitor in a department store designed the first portable electric vacuum cleaner and even registered a patent for it but unfortunately, he was not able to get enough funds together to actually make his vacuum so he sold the patent to a local businessman in 1908. This businessman was William Henry Hoover who added his own features to the design and sold their first vacuum, the Model O in late 1908 these and all his future vacuums became so popular that his name Hoover has become synonymous with vacuums worldwide.

Styles of Vacuum Cleaners

Canister / Cylinder Vacuum Cleaners

  • Canister or cylinder-style vacuum cleaners are most popular in Europe and usually have wheels and a long flexible hose that doubles up as the way to pull the machine behind you whilst you are vacuuming, these usually have a powerful motor and feature many different heads or nozzles so no matter what the surface you can be sure that you definitely have a suitable head to clean it with.
  • Many canister models have power heads as standard or add-on equipment containing the same sort of mechanical beaters as in upright units, making them as efficient on carpets as upright models. Such beaters are driven by a separate electric motor or a turbine that uses suction power to spin the roller via a drive belt.

There is only one downside to the cylinder vacuum really, first because the vacuum has such a long hose as well as the actual motor unit it can take up a lot of room when trying to store them, to try and help with this in recent years the power cable has been made to retract into the machine. The other downside is that because of the size of the hose you have to have a more powerful motor to be able to get suitable suction from the machine so if you are somebody who tries to keep their effect on the environment as small as possible these power hungry beasts may not be for you.

Upright Vacuum Cleaner

  • Uprights are best for cleaning homes that predominantly feature carpet, as a brush combs the carpet pile to lift trodden in the dirt. Uprights may be more suitable for those with lower back pain, as less bending down is required than with cylinders and some models are extremely maneuverable with easy steering.
  • Upright vacuum cleaners usually have a larger capacity than other cleaners, so you don’t need to empty them as often, and some are specially designed to deal with lifting stubborn pet hair from carpets because the distance from the brush to the bag is very small, especially when compared to cylinder models you are able to get the same performance from smaller motors which in itself is better for the environment as well as your energy bills.
  • There are many upright vacuums that are specifically designed for removing hair and lingering odors from carpets and upholstery that all pet owners struggle with and also regularly come with mini turbo tools which are an attachment that goes onto the suction hose that is handheld and includes a beater bar that helps to get that stubborn pet hair from the nooks and crannies in your home.

The main downside to upright cleaners is that while they are great for maneuvering around a single floor if you have to clean stairs it can be a pretty tough job although there is many accessories available to make this easier for you.

Cordless Vacuums

  • Small, compact, and perfect for a quick clean or for cleaning a small area, Cordless vacuum cleaners are light and battery-powered, so you can use them almost anywhere.
  • Cordless vacuum cleaners include stick vacuums, which are similar to upright cleaners but are lighter and smaller, and handheld vacuum cleaners, which are small and portable, making them perfect for spot cleaning and cleaning inside your car. Stick Vacuums can often convert into handheld vacuums, giving you the best of both worlds.
  • There are now full-size upright vacuums that are battery powered which combine the power and capacity of a traditional vacuum with the flexibility and ease of use of a handstick. As well as providing excellent cleaning for smaller spaces, they are easier to store than upright or cylinder cleaners thanks to their compact design. This makes them ideal for use in flats where storage space can be limited and a large capacity cleaner is not necessary.

Handheld vacuums are excellent for cleaning crumbs and mess from around your home, and for cleaning cars, caravans, and other small spaces. They have a limited capacity but are designed for light cleaning.
