In the following guide, we will be taking a look at the best portable air conditioners  available in the market today. There will be an in depth analysis of what they will be capable of in normal usage situations. So if you're in the market for portable air conditioners, read on!

Do I Need a Portable Air Conditioner?

While air conditioning systems are the ideal solution to unbearable heat, it's not often feasible for some due to strained finances. Not only does air conditioning cost money to install, you take a hit in the power bill too.

There are window type units you can install but often times these are pretty unsightly and can ruin the lines of your house. The common option is to install centralized cooling and heating - but these can get really expensive.

For it to work, you have to install ducting all around the house. That means ripping out the ceiling - requiring you to hire licensed contractors to do the work for you,

This is where portable air conditioners come into their element, Whereas in the past, portable air conditioners have been thought of as sub-par when compared to centralized cooling solutions  the recent improvements in tech in the recent years have improved portable air conditioners immensely. They finally make sense as a long term solution to cooling your home. The best part is, you don't even have to alter anything in your house. All you need is a window for the exhaust tubing and you're good to go. You can cool any room in your house

It's unbelievably practical. Lets say you have an extra room you don't usually us and you suddenly have visitors - you can just cart it in the room and presto, it's air conditioned. No muss no fuss.

Whilst not as widespread in Europe as it is in the U.S (Due to the heat and humidity in a lot of areas) air conditioning units are thought of as a necessity, with 86% of the U.S population possessing an air conditioning unit in 2007 compared to just 10% in 1965.

I Have a Large Room, Will My New Portable Air Conditioner Cool It Effectively?

When you are looking for a new portable air conditioner, there are a few aspects you need to think about.  When trying to decide if it is the right machine to cool your space, you need to consider how large the volume of the space is. For example a 9000 BTU (british thermal unit) portable ac is enough to cool a 400 square foot space, If you place that unit in a smaller space then (depending on the portable air conditioner's power system) one or two things may happen:

1. The portable air conditioner cycles too soon and the unit can't remove the humidity in the air properly

2. It lowers the life of your portable air conditioner and increases maintenance costs. Since it cycles so quickly, the start and stop cycle can take its toll.

3. It increases the power consumption. It takes power to start up the compressor motor. Though a motor may be rated at 700 watts- that rating is how much power it consumes while running.  It may take three times the wattage to start it up. Continuous cycles can drive the power consumption even higher.

However if your portable air conditioner unit is too small, then it will run continuously while failing to provide actual cooling. That's a waste of your money right there.

A lot of factors also need to be considered when choosing a portable a.c. Aside from room size, you also need to consider how many people normally stay in that room. How much sunlight can get into the room (if you don't have insulated glass) What appliances do you have in your room- which one of them give off heat? You need to consider all these factors when making your choice.

To give you a rough idea of how to choose the a machine that can keep even the biggest rooms feeling fresh and cold there is a rating system in place that uses the BTU (British Thermal Units) per hour rating.

Most rooms in the U.S have ceilings that are about 8 foot but if your rooms differ from this please adjust the estimations accordingly. For a rough guideline please see the following estimates but please remember as already mentioned there is other environmental factors you must think of when doing your calculations.

  • 8,000 BTUs will cover 200 sq. ft. (1,600 cubic feet)
  • 10,000 BTUs will cover 300 sq. ft. (2,400 cubic feet)
  • 12,000 BTUs will cover 400 sq. ft. (3,200 cubic feet)
  • 13,000 BTUs will cover 450 sq. ft. (3,600 cubic feet)
  • 14,000 BTUs will cover 500 sq. ft. (4,000 cubic feet)

How Do You Vent a Portable Air Conditioners?

Most portable air conditioners include window kits to allow the hot air that is produced by the sytem to be vented away from the room that you are trying to keep cool. As long as you have standard windows, this should be a suitable option for you. But, you have to also be aware that the manufacturers recommend that you do not extend the venting hose and as they are usually only between four to five foot long and the fact that they also say you are not to use extension cords either so you must ensure that you have a power socket close to the window if you use this option.

For sliding windows, you need to make sure that the bracket will be long enough to fit the opening. Units that feature double window brackets generally work well for sliding windows. A double bracket includes the standard window bracket plus an additional filler bracket.

When working with sliding doors, the window brackets will not be long enough to fill the vertical opening, so you'll need to fill the extra space with some other material like plywood or Plexiglas. Browse our most popular portable ACs for sliding windows or doors.

Some people prefer to exhaust hot air through a wall vent, directly outside or to another room, such as a garage or storage room. You can use a jigsaw to cut the correct size hole in the wall—but make sure to use a pipe and live wire detector to ensure there isn't any wiring or plumbing where you want to cut the hole. You can seal the edges of the hole with silicone or caulk.

Is It Hard to Maintain my New Portable Air Conditioner?

The most important part of maintaining your new air conditioner is the removal of the moisture that the machine pulls out of the air. Each model deals with this differently with some even using designs that are fully self-evaporating so you do not need to worry about emptying trays but most of the models feature trays that you need to empty at regular intervals but others do have hoses or pumps to remove the water by draining it out to a different place.

Hopefully after reading this you have a little bit of a better idea as what to look for whilst browsing for your new portable air conditioner so now we will show you some of what we feel are the best available on the market today.
